Cambodia truly is a wonderful country! As soon as I caught seight of the Cambodian landscape from the window onboard my plane, I instantly fell in love with this place. My expectations were already fairly high, but they were so easily exceeded!
I originally went traveling Asia with my friends back in January 2017, then met my aunt in Tokyo, and then later on continued traveling on my own. When I finally set foot in Cambodia, I was so excited to meet my family and attend the wedding festivities we were invited to take part in. My father’s little brother was getting married to his Cambodian/Danish bride Dadina. I feel so honoured to have been part of their love story in Cambodia, I have experienced so many things during my stay I normally would not have experienced. Seen a foreign culture up close and been accepted as part of their family.
Looking back now, I almost feel nostalgic remembering the people and places of this country! Therefore I have collected some of the (thousands of) pictures from my two weeks in Cambodia, and put together 8 reasons why I love this country, and why you will too.
The exceptional beaches & the outstanding nature
As the huge nature entusiast I consider myself to be, my favourite places are most often to be found in the stilness of a forest, a hidden beach, or a chain of mountains. Cambodia most definitely has it all! I did find the nature quite similar to the exceptional nature found in Thailand, however, Cambodia as a destination is not quite as touristy as Thailand. This means we got to experience some pretty exotic beaches without having to deal with endless amounts of tourists (win-win)! If you are looking for a quiet, tropical get-away, I most definitely would recommend Cambodia.
The beautiful temples
As an Asian country, Cambodia offers a variety of Buddhist temples. I visited one of these temples with my host family, and therefore I got to observe and learn different aspects of their religion. Actually, I felt quite humbled watching the people praying & getting blessed by monks! The temples themselves were modest, but stunning! The monks approachable and happy to answer any questions you might have towards their beliefs.
The traditions & the colorful culture
The greatest part of my travels to Cambodia was attending a traditional Cambodian wedding! This wedding lasted two days and consisted of different ceremonies, lots of music performed on traditional instruments, gifts, banquets, and lots of guests! By attending this wedding, I got to be part of these traditions and cultures. However, you may very easily experience the culture when on a vacation by eating traditional cuisine, interacting with locals, and driving through the countryside!
